Gord Downie's, The Secret Path, reflects a part of Canadian history that's often ignored. It offers a glimpse into the injustices experienced by generations of indigenous families. Gord's work is opening the door to discussion and acknowledgement in the hopes that we can continue walking the long road to reconciliation.
These creative reflections were created by individuals who are currently incarcerated in the Toronto South Detention Centre. They participated in a bookclub hosted in partnership by the Toronto Public Library and Literal Change. We want to showcase these pieces in order to create a positive connection between the incarcerated population and the general public.
There is a major correlation between a history of abuse and alienation and future acts of social deviance. Thus, it is not difficult to the connect the events and situations found in The Secret Path to the lives of these individuals in detention.
